Video excerpt: Pilot Introduction

Eating the South is an on-the-road television program that focuses on Southern food, culture, and personalities. I'll eat three meals in a city, town, or locale while showcasing the distinctive aspects of the area - the serious, the quirky, and the seriously quirky. One episode might be filmed in the kitchen of a fine-dining restaurant appealing to the viewer's culinary voyeurism; the next might find me cooking minutes-out-of-the-water seafood 30 miles offshore on a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Within this collection are two pilot episodes and blooper section that would make any gag-reel collector proud. I gathered a few friends who know how to operate video cameras, phoned a few chef buddies, rented a bus, and set forth into the Deep South with nothing more than a love for Southern food and culture and a strong desire to create a program that is unique, entertaining, and quirky. I was working with a shoestring budget and experienced a few minor technical glitches along the way, but I also had more fun than I could have ever expected. One thing is certain - if a television program focuses on Southern food, culture and personalities, it will never run out of material. Enjoy! Robert St. John
